Elena Rogojnikova of Hagé International: "Huge avocado sales to retailers, the pandemic affects exports more, and volatile exchange rates"

Last week, the Dutch company, Hagé International, started with the South African avocado season. This was done with its supplier there, Core Fruit. "We have had the ZZ2 brand on offer for years. It is very popular in the European Market. But, even our clients in Russia look forward to the arrival of this favorite brand," says Elena Rogojnikova.

"There was an avocado crisis in December last year. There was a surplus of mainly Hass avocados on the market. This surplus resulted in prices reaching an unprecedented low for that time of year. However, the market did a turnabout in the second half of January 2020. There were fewer Hass avocados. The greenskins from Isreal were scarce too. They were having an 'off-year'. The made for sky-high prices for both the Hass and greenskins."

"The arrival of the South African avocados is, therefore, welcome. And due to the corona crisis, they are reasonably expensive. These prices are also affected by competition. There are greenskin avocados from Peru and Kenya. They cost less, and there are relatively high volumes of these. Sufficient volumes of Hass and greenskin avocados are expected to arrive in the coming months. They will be from Peru, South Africa, Kenya, and from May, Colombia," says Elena.

"The situation with the corona crisis has a two-edged effect on avocado sales. On the one hand, sales to the retail sector are running at full speed. Last week, we sometimes sent twice as much volume to our retail clients. This is compared to the Christmas season. That has to do with extreme demand from consumers. On the other hand, it is because hospitality companies are closed."

"People are also working from home too. That means they are taking the time to cook extensively. They are also making healthy, tasty meals for the whole family. Then, avocados cannot be left out. Export sales are also continuing. These are, however, affected more by, not only, the pandemic. The volatile exchange rates are also having an effect on exports," concludes Elena.
