defining NATUURBOERDERY®

The original short definition of Natuurboerdery® philosophy was: "Natuurboerdery® is farming in harmony with nature, and employing best human science and technology."

Natuurboerdery® is more than an effort to combat the systemic problems of large scale industrial farming (e.g. pollution, health hazards, agricultural sprawl and dehumanised labour conditions).

It is a complete philosophical break with the industrial past.

The paradigm shift of Natuurboerdery® entails that our farming enterprise should act like a living open system, and not a purely profit driven mechanistic system. This entails an attitude change which embraces the “people, planet, profit” bottom lines. We take our guidelines from three sources: civilised human philosophy and ethics; ecosystem laws and sustainability; ad sound human science, technology and economics.

This approach allows the following comparison between Natuurboerdery®, other farming methods such as organic farming, and industrial farming.

Our efforts to model ourselves on a living ecosystem, also with long term sustainable survival in mind, makes for another possibility of defining Natuurboerdery®.

This is in essence the definition of life in contrast to dead matter, (as applied to farming):
"Natuurboerdery® is farming with awareness and sensitivity towards the ever changing natural and human environment, and adapting to this change with best efficiency in order to stay relevant and to prosper."

Our logo has had its own history. We started off with a (too naturalistic) depiction of “ecosystem cyclicity” in 2003. This may also have been off-putting for people not wanting a dung beetle on their food!

Next, in 2010, we tried an extremely abstract combination of a drop of water, the yin-yang and eternity symbol for sustainability.  This was also found to be unsatisfactory, because it deviated from the ZZ2 brand colours and was not readily understandable or attention grabbing.

Thirdly, in 2012, we tried a circle (continuity) combined with a growing seedling, all in green. This looked very unobtrusive and not visually striking enough, and from a distance reminded of the “worm in the apple”.

Lastly, we found the striking, symbolic and very satisfying, logo we now use in 2015 designed by Edmundson Martin Inc. From this “pro-biotic” definition of Natuurboerdery® (see above), it is easy to understand the symbolism of our logo. The hands (human ability and endeavour) nurture and protect the plant (the living ecosystem of our farm).

The colours pay tribute to our resources (red – soil; yellow – sun and energy; green – living nature). At the same time we believe in “linking hands” with all our stakeholders, and all participants of our “rainbow nation”.

We also see the yellow hand as the sensitivity (only found in hands!) and the red hand on the efficiency of doing.
